Leading diabetes consultant Dr Fiona Campbell has been awarded an OBE for her work in helping to improve diabetes care nationally and locally for children and young people affected by diabetes.
For more than 25 years, in her role as a consultant physician, day-to-day Fiona has provided clinical care, compassion and advice to help families, children and young people with type 1 diabetes to manage the challenge of living with diabetes. And championed and mentored other members of her clinical team. Alongside, she has led the Children and Young Person’s policy and quality improvement agenda working closely with NHS leaders and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
Among her many roles, Dr Campbell shares her expertise and clinical guidance to challenge unfair policies that discriminate against and impact negatively on children and families living with diabetes. She does this as a member of our Council of Healthcare Professionals, representing Diabetes UK at the RCPCH and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and within the Department of Work and Pensions.
Dr Campbell’s knowledge, passion and commitment to using data to drive improvements in care and support have played a significant part in enthusing, encouraging and supporting paediatric diabetes teams to catalyse change locally – resulting in improved health outcomes of children and young people, as shown through the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) and peer review programmes.

“Fiona has for many years been a shining light in the world of paediatric diabetes, both as a clinician and a change-maker at a local and national level. She is a leader and an innovator, and should rightly be proud that her enormous contributions have been recognised with this honour.”
Dr Campbell has also worked on collaborative meetings between Diabetes UK and the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD), and has contributed to extensive joint working a member of many expert advisory groups throughout her career.
Over the years Dr Campbell has both presented and chaired sessions at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference and also at Diabetes UK local groups providing ongoing education and learning for the paediatric diabetes clinical community.
Alongside this, she has volunteered extensively, in Scotland particularly, for Diabetes UK care and children’s events providing clinical expertise, mentoring and support for staff and families at weekends and holidays over many years.
