A retired, dad-of-two from Darlington is climbing the equivalent of Ben Nevis (1,345 metres) twenty times on a vertical climbing machine to raise funds for Diabetes UK.
Bruce Elliott, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 51 years, is taking on the challenge from his back garden to help other people with the condition and raise funds.
Bruce, 57, created the challenge after thinking about all the places he has missed the most during the national lockdown.
He said: “We all have places we miss at the moment, that we’re not able to visit. For me that’s mountains and hill walking, so this is my way of connecting with those places while supporting a charity that means a lot to me.”
He has already hiked over 12,000 metres and is set to finish the challenge on 14th February.
Bruce, who has been supporting people in the local community during lockdown as part of his local mutual aid group, added: “I have been so lucky to enjoy a full and active life and Diabetes UK have played a major part in helping me to do so. Their support and guidance has been invaluable and the research they fund has led to so many improved treatments for diabetes. I hope that my efforts will help support many other people living with the condition.”
