The GP Data Trust pilot study

doctorandpatientnewsize.jpg

The research team at the University of Manchester is looking for the views of GPs and patients as part of their GP Data Trust (GPDT) pilot study.

In May 2021 NHS Digital announced that the General Practice Data for Planning and Research (GPDPR) programme would collect primary care data to be used in a non-identifying form in research and planning activities. Over a million people opted out of the programme, prompting NHS Digital to delay it to provide more time to speak with relevant stakeholders about their concerns.

The GPDT study aims to explore:

  • why patients opted out of sharing their GP data through NHS Digital’s GPDPR programme
  • whether a Data Trust model could provide a more acceptable method for sharing GP data for health research and planning purposes.

They want to gather the views of as many people as possible to gain insights to help them to design a GP Data Trust that will be useful to researchers and health care professionals and takes patients’ needs and values into account, whilst not placing unnecessary burdens on the workload of GPs or other stakeholders.

Who will conduct the research?

The research team consists of Dr Sarah Devaney, Professor Søren Holm, Professor John Ainsworth, Dr James Cunningham, Ms Catherine Bowden, and Dr Nigel Burns who are researchers at the University of Manchester.

How to take part

The views of patients and GPs will be collected via online surveys which are available until 30 November 2022, and interviews.

Interviews

The project is also looking for case studies to interview – which won’t take more than an hour to complete. Those taking part will receive a Love2Shop voucher in recognition of their time.

They’re keen to hear our insights into the sharing of GP data so if you’d be interested to take part and be interviewed by the team please get in touch directly with catherine.bowden@manchester.ac.uk or sarah.devaney@manchester.ac.uk
