A new deal between scientific publisher Wiley and digital education group Jisc will allow for diabetes researchers at UK universities to publish their work in Open Access for free in Diabetic Medicine
At Diabetes UK, research is a key part of our mission. We want to create a world where diabetes can do no harm, which is only possible if we work with scientists and fund their work to help us understand more about the condition in all its forms. Over the last ten years, we’ve supported hundreds of research projects with over £67 million in funding, the findings of which will help to improve the lives of people living with, or at risk of, diabetes.
One of the key parts of the scientific process is sharing research findings, not only with other researchers but also with people who may use the findings to inform policy or in their healthcare practice, as well as the wider public. While many journals require the reader to pay a fee to access the paper, increasingly more papers are being published as Open Access (OA), allowing anyone to read the paper free of charge. As OA allows scientific research to be shared more widely, a coalition of international research organisations established Plan S, an initiative to make all research funded by public grants OA by 2021.
Diabetes UK helps to share new diabetes research across the globe with its peer-reviewed journal, Diabetic Medicine, which publishes research on all clinical aspects of diabetes.
Currently, when researchers want to publish an OA paper in Diabetic Medicine, they will have to pay the publisher, Wiley, an article processing charge of around £3000. In a new deal created between Wiley and Jisc, researchers in UK universities will be able to publish OA papers in all Wiley journals, including Diabetic Medicine, free of charge. This deal, which started at the end of March this year, will also allow university researchers to access all of Wiley’s journals for free.

This exciting new deal between Jisc and Wiley allows more of our researchers to publish their diabetes research as Open Access. Sharing scientific advances in diabetes research as widely as possible is key in working towards a world where diabetes can do no harm.”
