Our social media house rules

Our social media channels are available to help you learn more about diabetes. Whether you’re living with the condition, caring for someone who does, or simply want to learn more, we’re here to provide you with all the latest information, support and advice on type 1, type 2, and beyond.

In order to make our social media channels a more helpful and friendly place to get support, please keep our house rules in mind before posting anything.

  • Do not post any content that’s likely to offend other users. This includes comments, images and memes which reference swearing, racist or sexist language.
  • Bullying of other users will not be tolerated.
  • Any posts that are deemed to be spam, or appear to be coming from automated accounts will be deleted.
  • We encourage open discussions and want people to talk about issues that affect them - however we will remove any comments deemed unsuitable or that are offensive to individuals or groups of people. Posts that could potentially cause confusion or that promote misleading information about diabetes will be removed. We will ensure we contact you and give an explanation should we remove one of your posts.
  • Always speak to your healthcare team before acting on any advice given to you by other users. Remember everyone is different, so what works for one person may not work for you.
  • If you would like to speak to someone about diabetes, our confidential helpline is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm.
  • Advertising is not allowed on this page. This includes diabetes related supplements, conferences, surveys or requests for help with research.
  • If you are undertaking diabetes related research and want to publicise this, email research@diabetes.org.uk with full details of your work and we will reply as quickly as possible. We don't advertise research on our social media channels, but we can suggest alternative channels.
  • Remember that this is a public page and anyone can see posts or comments that you add.
  • Be careful with your personal data. Don’t give too much information away through social media, and don’t share details with anyone you don’t know. This includes sharing your own contact details (such as your address or phone number), as well as the contact details of other people.
  • Please be mindful that not everyone living with diabetes will want their condition to be made public, so keep this in mind when tagging in friends and family. This also extends to the names and details of any healthcare professionals.
  • We also abide by the Community Standards set out by individual social media platforms. These can be used to help you understand what types of posts are acceptable, and what type of content may be reported and removed.
  • We use Give Panel to contact people who fundraise for us on Facebook to thank them for their support. We also ask if they’d like to hear more about donating, volunteering and campaigning and if we can stay in touch by post and phone. Give Panel privacy policy: givepanel.com/privacy

Moderating content

We moderate our social media pages during the week - Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, excluding holidays. Please let us know if you see any content that you feel breaks any of our house rules, and we will act as quickly as possible.

If we recognise that you’ve broken any of our house rules on one occasion, we’ll hide your comment, and make sure we let you know – including an explanation of why we’ve taken this step. This excludes situations where we deem a potentially dangerous post to be attributed to an automated account – in these instances we will delete these posts immediately.

In some circumstances, we may surpass levels in our escalation procedure and issue an immediate suspension or ban. Our three strike policy is as follows:

  1. Highlight the guidelines and remind you of the expectations laid out in our house rules
  2. Warn you of any action, should further breaches occur
  3. Issue a suspension or ban.
