The only tablet in this group is pioglitazone. This works by reducing insulin resistance and improving insulin sensitivity, allowing the insulin that the body produces to work more effectively. It also helps to protect the cells in the pancreas, allowing them to carry on producing insulin for longer.
They are taken once or twice daily with or without food
Pioglitazone can be used alone or in combination with either a sulphonylurea or metformin or in combination with both. It can also be used in combination with insulin, if intolerant to metformin.

Side effects
