A group aimed at connecting people in Tower Hamlets living with diabetes, plus carers of people with diabetes, has been launched.
Local residents Laura Dickens (pictured left) and Lynda Stewart (pictured right) are behind the formation of the group.
Laura, 30, is a Student Engagement and Enhancement Officer at Middlesex University and is also studying law at Birkbeck College. She is lives in Bromley-By-Bow and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was four years old.
Laura says: “I want to build a diabetes community to reduce loneliness and the feeling of isolation amongst those living with diabetes in Tower Hamlets - particularly during Covid-19.
“Secondly, I wanted to try help put together eye-care awareness - as someone who avoided their eye-care visits for a good five years and developed background retinopathy.
“Lastly, I'm into running and cycling and want to help people living with diabetes to get into sport and exercise - particularly as we have so many lovely parks in Tower Hamlets!”
Lynda, 42, is a management consultant, who lives in Bow and was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of just four. She has experienced several complications of diabetes including two kidney transplants and has been a volunteer with us for many years.
Lynda says: “I am very keen to improve the experiences of people living with diabetes and increase awareness of prevention of type 2 diabetes.
