A keen walker is taking on the challenge of our London Wellness Walk this year to help raise money for us.
Kouros Alexander Majidi, 54, a retired photographic technician, has been inspired to take on the walk - on Sunday 24 September - because he lives with type 2 diabetes and wants to help stay fit and further research into the condition.
He is already one of our regular fundraisers, having completed the One Million Steps Challenge three times for the charity, plus undertaking a different Thames Path walk, completing a ‘1000 Miles in the Month’ challenge and also taking part in last year’s Wellness Walk.
Kouros said:
“The walking started when the Covid lockdown happened. I looked online for something to do and found Diabetes UK. I have been walking ever since.”
The ten-mile walk will start in the beautiful Battersea Park and walkers will criss-cross 12 of London’s most iconic bridges as they notch up the miles heading east.
Passing Big Ben and the London Eye, thousands of fundraisers will see the sights of central London before finishing at Potters Fields Park in the shadow of Tower Bridge.
The route is step-free, accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. There is also a shorter five-mile option.
We support people who are living with diabetes - a serious condition which, left undiagnosed or not managed safely, can lead to devastating long-term complications, including blindness, heart disease and stroke.
London Bridges Wellness Walk is a family day out for a good cause and everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Registration is open and costs £10 per person. There is no minimum sponsorship.
Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly. If not managed well, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to devastating complications, including sight loss, amputation, kidney failure and stroke. With the right treatment and support people living with diabetes can lead a long and healthy life.
You can support Kouros on his fundraising page.
Jill Steaton, our South East Coast and London Head, said:
“Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without the determination and generosity of our incredible fundraisers.
“We are extremely grateful to Kouros and all the money raised will help fund ground-breaking research, care services and campaigns that can change the lives of those living with diabetes.”
